A violin case is required if the violin is going on tour to ensure that it arrives intact at its destination. The violin case is usually made of wood or sturdy plastic and often has a water-repellent coating.
A distinction is made between shaped case and oblong case. Outside, the violin case is additionally provided with a handle and a shoulder strap so it can be worn without problems. Inside, it is well padded to protect the instrument against damage to the body caused for example by dropping the case. In the violin case also the corresponding violin bow, shoulder rest and rosin find a place next to the violin. Some violin cases are coated with nylon outside and have an extra pocket into which the sheet music can be stored.
