How Big and Heavy Is a Children’s Cello?

Children’s cellos are available in different sizes, designed to match a child’s body size and arm reach. The most common sizes range from 1/16 to 3/4, while 4/4 refers to a full-size cello for adults. Choosing the correct cello size is essential to ensure comfortable, ergonomic playing for the child.

A 4/4 cello has a body length of approximately 750 mm, while a 3/4 cello measures around 690 mm. A 1/2 cello has a body length of about 655 mm, a 1/4 cello around 590 mm, a 1/8 cello approximately 510 mm, and a 1/16 cello about 460 mm.

Weight is also an important consideration: a 1/4 cello weighs approximately 1.8 kg, while a 3/4 or 1/2 cello weighs around 2.5 kg. A full-size 4/4 cello weighs approximately 3 kg. The case or gig bag, which can weigh between 2.2 and 5.5 kg depending on size and material, should also be taken into account when selecting an instrument. Lightweight cello cases are available starting from around 1 kg.

How Much Does a Children’s Cello Cost?

Small cellos in beginner sets offer an ideal entry point into the world of the cello. These sets include not only a properly sized cello for young musicians, but also essential accessories such as a bow, rosin, and a case.

The cost of a children’s cello set can vary depending on quality, size, and brand. In general, well-made beginner models start at around €800 (set price). These instruments feature solid craftsmanship and are well suited for young players learning the fundamentals of cello playing.
