Find the right cello size
The correct size depends on the player’s height and arm length.
A cello that is too large or too small makes posture and technique difficult.
Use the table below as a guide when choosing the right size:
| Cello size | Approx. height | Approx. age | Note |
|---|
| 4/4 | from 1.65 m | from approx. 14 yrs | Full size – standard for adults |
| 3/4 | approx. 1.50–1.65 m | approx. 9–12 yrs | Popular with older students |
| 1/2 | approx. 1.25–1.50 m | approx. 7–10 yrs | For middle school age children |
| 1/4 | approx. 1.10–1.25 m | approx. 5–7 yrs | For younger children |
Tip: If in doubt, ask the teacher to confirm the size. The cello should stand comfortably, and the player should reach along the fingerboard with ease.
