The AQUILA plain sheep gut E string was developed specifically for Baroque violin following historical models. It combines carefully selected natural material with refined modern craftsmanship and offers an excellent balance of historical authenticity, stable playability, and an expressive, natural tone.

Why AQUILA? HU hand-polished & high twist

For top quality, AQUILA produces E strings with diameters above 0.50 mm exclusively with a high twist. This demanding process increases the gut’s elasticity and supports a very quick, light response, clear brilliance, and long service life.

The “HU” (hand-polished) finish stays close to the historical original: the strings are gently polished, removing significantly fewer fibers than modern sanding methods. This preserves the gut’s robustness, improves acoustic performance, and allows for precise, sensitive control.

For the ideal balance of response, tension, and tone color, this string is available in the following diameters: 0.54 mm, 0.56 mm, 0.58 mm, 0.62 mm, 0.64 mm, and 0.66 mm.
Tip: Thinner gauges usually respond faster and sound slightly brighter; thicker gauges often provide more core, projection, and stability.
