The Best Pieces for Violin and Piano, score and violin part, difficulty: difficult.

The violinist Samuel Dushkin was born in Poland on 13 December 1891. ln 1903 he moved with his parents to the USA, where he had his first music lessons. Later on he continued his musical studies in Europe, taking lessons with the celebrated violinists Leopold Auer and Fritz Kreisler. Dushkin became known particularly through his collaboration with Igor Stravinsky. in 1930 the two men were introduced to one another by Willy Strecker of the Schott Publishing house in Mainz, providing the Russian composer with the assistance of an experienced instrumentalist in working on the composition of his Concerto in D Dushkin worked as Stravinsky's assistant on his Violin Concerto and gave the first performance of the work with the Berlin radio orchestra, conducted by the composer. The violinist also gave technical advice in the planning stages of the Duo concertante, and gave the first performance of this work too in 1932, accompanied on the piano by the composer. Their musical collaboration became more intense in the years that followed: Dushkin and Stravinsky travelled as a duo on extended concert tours and developed a close friendship. The violinist died in New York on 24 June 1976, after a fulfilling life as a soloist. Samuel Dushkin wrote numerous transcriptions for violin of melodies that were popular and well known in his day: these included works by Stravinsky, of course, but also by composers such as Bizet and Rachmaninov, Albéniz, Wieniawski and others besides.
This collection brings together arrangements by celebrated masters and lesser-known composers, too: exotic settings of melodies by Paul Kirman, R. Felber and Alexander Sasonoff appear alongside a captivating waltz by Max Reger, the musical imagery of Mussorgsky's rippling waves and the jazz sounds of George Gershwin's Short Story, for instance. Stravinsky is represented too, of course, with a movement from The Firebird and a Tango, offering a dazzling display of impressive pieces for the violin.
