Finding the right cello size
The correct cello size depends on the player’s height and arm length.
A cello that is too large or too small can make posture and technique difficult.
The table below provides a helpful guide for choosing the right size:
| Cello size | Approx. height | Approx. age | Note |
|---|
| 4/4 | from 1.65 m | from approx. 14 years | Full size – standard for adults |
| 3/4 | approx. 1.50 – 1.65 m | approx. 9 – 12 years | Popular among older students |
| 1/2 | approx. 1.25 – 1.50 m | approx. 7 – 10 years | For children of middle school age |
| 1/4 | approx. 1.10 – 1.25 m | approx. 5 – 7 years | For younger children |
Tip: If unsure, we recommend having your teacher determine the correct size.
The cello should rest comfortably between the knees, and the player should easily reach along the fingerboard.
